http://www.soilandhealth.org/02/0201hyglibcat/020127shelton.III/020127.ch19.htm I assume you are enquiring about human beings? This article suggests that someone died after only 18 days. However they also say that a newborn baby can last longer than this. I suppose if you are 2 stone underweight than you should be, before you 'start' then you are going to die very quickly compared to someone who is 40 stone overweight and unable to move because of it!

Within five days to three weeks.... In his dissent, Justice Lynch described 'the "likely" various effects from the lack of hydration and nutrition' as follows: Brophy's mouth would dry out and become caked or coated with thick material. His lips would become parched and cracked. His tongue would swell, and might crack. His eyes would recede back into their orbits and his cheeks would become hollow. The lining of his nose might crack and cause his nose to bleed. His skin would hang loose on his body and become dry and scaly. His urine would become highly concentrated, leading to burning of the bladder. The lining of his stomach would dry out and he would experience dry heaves and vomiting. His body temperature would become very high. His brain cells would dry out, and the thick secretions that would result could plug his lungs and cause death. At some point within five days to three weeks his major organs, including his lungs, heart, and brain, would give out and he would die.' (Brophy v. New England Sinai Hospital, No. 85E0009-G1, 10/21/85: 28-29) http://www.humanlife.org/euth_supl/html/7-2.html

Referring back to my first reply. If we are talking about not eating whilst continuing to consume water, I understand the following. There is a calculation to determine if you are of 'normal' weight. This is the BMI - Body Mass Index This number is obtained by dividing your weight (in Kilos) by your height squared (in metres). For example if you weigh 90 kilos and are 2 metres tall, BMI = 90 divided by (2 x 2) = 22.5 70 kilos and only 1.5 metre tall? 70 / (1.5 x 1.5) = 70/2.25 = 31.11 You use the number obtained to determine how 'healthy' you are using the following figures. Underweight = less than 18.5 Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 Overweight = 25-29.9 Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater Now I hear you ask, where is this going with respect to starving to death? Well the answer is that it is considered in the medical profession that you will die if and when you have lost 40 percent of your normal body weight. The BMI has a variation to allow for male/female and differing body structure. BUT if someone has 'Normal' BMI (but at the low end) say 19 and they actually weigh 75 kilos, then they would die should they lose 30 kilos (40 percent) and subsequently only weigh 45 kg. Time (how long?) is not really something that can be accurately calculated, but it is more a case of WHEN !
