An observer on the beach always sees larger waves come in directly toward him even though some distance out from the shore they are seen to be approaching at an angle. What makes the waves straighten out?

Question #25452. Asked by Nude Dude.

    Guru???

I think that it has to be to do with the depth of water. Waves travelling at an angle will slow down on the side closest to the shore due to the dampening effect of the reduced depth. The furthest away side travels faster so decreasing the angle until it is parallel to the shore.
