From where comes the abbreviation 'Xmas'?

Question #25487. Asked by Bryce. (Dec 24 02 10:03 AM)

    Tabby Tom

The letter X is not the Roman X but the Greek chi, the first letter of Christos (Christ). It is thus an abbreviation for Christ, and Christmas can be written as Xmas. In older manuscripts you may also find such abbreviations as Xian for Christian and Xopher for Christopher.

From the Greek spelling XPICTO3, ie Christos, using the Greek letter's initial to represent Christ.
