and I think the quote is, 'Earn this. Earn it.', meaning Ryan needs to honor the cost paid by the six men who died 'saving' him. I found the final scene, with the salute, particularly moving. Dec 24 02, 5:17 PM

Ih a way, you get the impression that Miller's final words have haunted Ryan all his life. In the end he asks his wife if he's a good man and if he lead a good life--as if he's desperately seeking verification that he has in fact earned the time on earth that was paid for by the lives of the men in Miller's patrol. It was a very touching ending--and one that I can imagine probably did take place in real life for some WWII veterans. Dec 24 02, 6:19 PM
