The inner edge of Saturn's rings revolves 2 1/2 miles per second faster than the outer edge. Based on this information, would it be possible for Saturn's rings to be solid disks?

Nude Dude, I haven't got two books which agree with one another regarding Saturn's rings.... Apparently, they are a source of mystery to astronomers worldwide. There are a great number of sites on this subject - Here is one of the better ones: http://www.firstscience.com/site/articles/rings.asp . Sorry I can't do better than that, ND.

No. A solid disk obviously doesn't move like this. Looking at a spinning phonograph record, we see that the outer edge moves much faster than its interior points. But just as Venus moves faster that the earth under the influence of the sun, so objects closer to Saturn move faster than those farther out. The conclusion is that the rings are made of swarms of small particles, ranging in size from dust to huge boulders, each in orbit around Saturn.
