    Question #25733. Lammas asks:

I was once told by a history professor that more colonists volunteered to fight for the British in the American Revolution than for Washington et al. I could not believe it, and have never found this in print. Can anyone give me a reference?

    Jac

I have also heard this, and found it in print when studying American History for a module at university. I will go in search of my textbooks and see if it's in them. It's not all that incredible when you consider that loyalty to home and crown, and an unwillingness to sever ties with family back in Britain probably played a large factor, also the fear of being on the 'wrong' side when the army arrived and squashed the rebellion. No one expected the Revolution to be totally successful, if they were cynical.

    Jac,

Many thanks. I'd be plad if you can dig out a reference.
