Why did the Czech Republic and Slovakia split into two separate countries?

Question #25736. Asked by Dunc. (Dec 30 02 4:26 PM)

    Gnomon

Both of these nations were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before the Great War. After World War II, they were bunged together to make one country, even though they had very little to do with each other. The first chance they got after the Russians admitted they could manage their own affairs, they split up.

It's widely believed that the split that took effect in 1993 was encouraged by Czechs in the government who saw Slovakia as economically backward (which it was) and as a burden to the Czech lands.

Excuse me nuages but my wife comes from Slovakia, they were not economically backwards. The Czechs stole many millions making Slovakia a lot poorer than they were. During the split the Czechs flew nearly all of the commercial airlines into their country and when they split they kept them.

What Bennett wrote is the real reason for spliting: Chauvinism of small, bud loud group of Slovaks led by Vladimir Meciar. “Stolen millions” is among top ten (unsupported) claims of this group. Czech government took advantage of offered split and forced it to the end due economical and political reasons. Our relation with Slovaks is best in our history.
Compare economical development of Czech countries and Slovakia in 1918 and in 1992 – this reveal the direction of a “moneyduct”.
