sequoianoir says: Seriously ! Depends on how tall you are and how far above the ocean's surface you are actually positioned, for example in the crow's nest ! Also depends on the height of the object that may be over the other side of the horizon. The formula is: 1.17 times the square root of your height of eye = Distance to the horizon in nautical miles http://www.boatsafe.com/kids/distance.htm Explains how you would see the very top of a 81 foot lighthouse for instance, 14.04 nautical miles away although the horizon is only 3.51 miles away. Mon Dec 30 18:51:12 CST 2002 (Delete Entry) Should have added that the 'height of eye' is in FEET ! Mon Dec 30 19:14:22 CST 2002 (Delete Entry) (Reposted as one entry - McG)
