The conductor Herbert von Karajan is acknowledged as one of the foremost interpreters of the music of composer Richard Strauss, which may be why his recording of the opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra was used in the opening of '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

Assuming you mean the theme music to the movie '2001: A Space Oddysey' the piece is called 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' which was composed by Richard Strauss.

You must listen to the Portsmouth Sinfonia's version of this (emphasis on the Sin). It is/was an orchestra with a variable number of musicians with differing skill levels. Some picking up an instrument for the first time. I dare you not to smile if you hear it. http://members.teleweb.at/hspecht/popular.htm
