Diamonds come in almost all hues: yellow, pink, blue, and of course white, grey and black. A natural black diamond has the same structure, form and properties as a white or coloured diamond. Hardness, or more accurately resistance to abrasion, is the principal physical property of a diamond. Since it is the hardest of all minerals, a diamond scratches all other minerals and can only be marred by another diamond. A black diamond is more likely to splinter when cut than a white one but, once cut, is statistically harder. Where does this black colour come from? Very simply from myriads of microscopic and very dense graphite or hematite inclusions that absorb light and give the gems their almost metallic lustre. Without these inclusions, black diamonds would display neither their deep dark color nor their intense brilliance. http://www.degrisogono.com/bs/en/news/book/book.htm

The most common usage for the term Black Diamond is when referring to COAL ! Coal is obviously BLACK and almost 100 percent CARBON. Diamond is one of the purest forms of Carbon. Coal also has great value , not in the sense of a diamond for jewelry but as a very useful fuel and it exists in great quantity. http://members.tripod.com/appalachian_railroad/abcsofcoal.html
