Mammy (Tom's owner) was originally a black lady with a dialect. In today's editions, she is frequently re-dubbed. Thus, 'Well slap my face if this ain't a mess!' becomes: 'Well I'll be darned. This is such a mess!' In the original series, Mammy had not only poor grammar, but also poor spelling when she wrote something. That too, is usually cleaned up -- if she makes an appearance at all. In many films, she has been completely cut out. Mammy-Two-Shoes appears in the first episode of Tom and Jerry and then has 17 more appearances through 1952. She changes very little and her voice was pretty much always the same (voiced by Lillian Randolph). You never see her face and her chin appears only once, in 'Part Time Pal.' In 1954 the Supreme Court declared racial segregation unconstitutional and the results in Hollywood were quick. Because of the racial issue Mammy-Two-Shoes' last episode was in 1952 but the new court ruling put pressure on re-issuing old cartoons with her presence still in them. MGM decided to recolor and dub the old cartoons with an irish maid and the voice of June Foray. The Cartoon Network has episodes that are dubbed again with a new set of voices. http://tomandjerrycartoons.com/tjchar.html
