Definition: Author n. (fem. authoress) 1 writer, esp. of books. Writer: Someone who can write or engages in writing, especially for professional and/or artistic purposes. The principal financial rewards, apart from a rare 'best-seller' or 'blockbuster', are in films, television, lecturing, adjudicating, and winning a significant prize. Poets, novelists, and literary critics are, however, only a small minority of those for whom writing is a major part of their everyday work. Professional writers in this wider sense include journalists, scriptwriters for radio, television, and the motion-picture industry, advertising copywriters, and publicists, and writing is a key element in teaching, preaching, publishing, government, science, medicine, and commerce. Authors by Profession (vol. 1, 1978, From the Introduction of Printing until the Copyright Act 1911; vol. 2, 1984, From the Copyright Act 1911 until the End of 1981, London, Society of Authors). This has some hard questions on film, TV, opera and theatre. Some are UK-biased, because that's where I'm based. Sorry America! It was a round at a charity quiz I ran in London in November 2000. Thanks to Nancy A Hollenbaugh for her help.
