For those who don't know the story, Mr. Gerald Ratner is a businessman who once owned several high-street jewellery stores. To cut a long story short (full account at http://www.guardian.co.uk/internetnews/story/0,7369,723480,00.html ) , he once made a remark saying that he considered a pair of his company's own earrings were 'total crap', and a prawn sandwich from Mark's and Spencer would probably outlast them. That little speech cost him his career.

A small correction to the above: Ratner was actually describing a decanter and glasses set as being 'crap'. He then went on to make a further remark about a set of earrings his company produced.
