How did early explorers economize with the provisions for a polar expedition?

According to this site, it was by feeding the dogs daenge, a mixture of chopped up fish, tallow, and maize-meal, all boiled together into a sort of porridge. This dish was served three times a week, and the dogs were simply mad for it. http://www.db3nf.com/library/1462-3.html Unfortunately, sometimes the dogs where eaten on the way back.

Before the expedition the explorers deliberately ate a lot of fatty foods and put on several pounds of extra weight so that the fat would serve as food and fuel.
