This type of puzzle was very popular in a very popular American magazine called GAMES (which I think is no longer in publication - can any American readers confirm this?). GAMES Magazine called them Equation Analysis Tests.

I have seen it called a ditloid. This is derived from 1 DITLOID (= 1 day in the life of Ivan Denisovich). It would be handy if this name caught on, but I don't think it is doing so.
