The only NHL player to die from an injury in a game was Bill Masterton, whose head struck the ice in 1968.

Ben Maller recalls:
"After 35 years, the night of Jan. 13, 1968, still is indelibly etched in my memory. That was the night Bill Masterton was injured during the North Stars' game against Oakland. He died two days later, the first and only National Hockey League player to have died from injures suffered in a game."
