    If you have a balance scale what is the minimum number of weights that can be used to weigh any number of pounds from one to forty...What are the weights?

    		You can do it with just 4 weights.

    They are 1lbs, 3lbs, 9lbs and 27lbs

    		You do with four weights (1, 3, 9 and 27) by putting weights on both sides of the scale. For example, to weigh something which is 25 pounds, you but 27 and 1 on one side, 3 on the other side, and the item you are weighing on the same side as the 3.
