Where did the term 'strawman poll' come from?

Question #26958. Asked by Jim. (Jan 23 03 11:38 PM)

I've never heard of strawman poll, but a straw poll is a rough system of voting where straws are either whole or broken for yea or nay. A similar thing gives rise to the expression drawing the short straw, where the straws are given out rather than collected in, to determine who will do the (usually unpopular or dangerous) task.
