No luck in tracking down the flavour but the first authenticated reference in Britain appears in the accounts of the Lord Steward's Department for 1686, itemizing 12 dishes of ice cream at one pound cost per dish for James II and his officers, who were in camp at Hounslow Heath. Earlier references relating to Alexander the Great, Nero and the Egyptian Pharoahs were chilled by or containing snow and were not ice cream. according to the New Shell Book of Firsts, evidence points to Britain as being the birth place of dairy ice cream. Charles I had a French chef, Gerald Tissain, who prepared iced deserts which seem to have been made with milk or cream.

Brainy Blonde

Brainy Blonde says: Caesar sent teams of runners into the mountains to get snow, which was then flavored with honey, fruits, and juices. Marco Polo returned to Italy from the Far East with a recipe that closely resembled what is now called sherbet. Historians believe that this is the recipe that evolved into ice cream sometime during the 16th century in Italy. Ice cream was first made available to the general public for the first time at Cafe Procope, the first cafe in Paris. http://www.andersonscustard.com/icecream_trivia.html Fri Jan 24 00:22:28 CST 2003 (Delete Entry) (Reposted to fix characters - McG)
