Harry S. Truman. Truman's daughter Margaret was an aspiring singer. She gave a recital in Washington D. C. on December 5, 1950. The Washington Post reported: 'Miss Truman cannot sing very well....She is flat a good deal of the time....She communicates almost nothing of the music she presents....There are few moments in her recital when one can relax and feel confident that she will make her goal, which is the end of the song.' The President wrote to the critic, Paul Hume, as follows: 'I have just read your lousy review buried in the back pages. You sound like a frustrated old man who never made a success, an eight-ulcer man on a four-ulcer job, and all four ulcers working. I have never met you, but if I do you'll need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a supporter below. Westbrook Pegler, a guttersnipe, is a gentleman compared to you. You can take that as more of an insult than as a reflection on your ancestry.' {Source;} 'The Frank Muir Book', a remarkable anthology of abusive quotations set in their social context.
