    I asked this question two years ago, but it was never answered: in the summer of 1944, in a northeastern American city, a large audience enjoying a specific form of entertainment heard the band strike up a piece of patriotic music that had a traditional significance in the context. Where was this audience, what was the music, and what did it signal to the performers?
