Not only does this street designate Toronto's east-west split, it is also the city's longest artery. In fact, Yonge is known as the world's longest street, stretching from Lake Ontario to the town of Rainy River, more than 1900 km away. Used as a trail by the Hurons, the road came to be an official passage in the 1790s. Today it is a beehive of activity, with businesses lining both sides, especially in the section between Front and Lawrence. One of Toronto's three TTC subway lines operates along this thoroughfare.

This website reckons it's a myth about it being the longest street because it's actually only 56km long.
It's Highway 11 and not Yonge Street that was 1900km which stretched from Lake Ontario, Toronto north past North Bay to Cochrane, west through Kapuskasing and Thunder Bay, and ending at Rainy River on the border with Minnesota.
Other sites say different so... take your pick who's correct!!
