I've found masses of sites about the red packets being given to children, but not the greeting or response. Will this do? Saying 'Kung Hei Fat Choy' ('Happy New Year') during the New Year period brings good fortune and prosperity. Good fortune may manifest as romance for single people, good grades for students, jobs for the unemployed or health for the sick. In the days before New Year, Chinese families thoroughly clean their houses - hoping to sweep out any ill fortune associated with the old year - to make room for the good luck coming their way in the New Year. Families in mourning should delay their house cleaning until after the New Year - to avoid accumulating bad luck.
