It depends upon how one defines the word. A TV or stage magician is really an illusionist or conjuror - performing sleight-of-hand tricks which deceive the eyes of the people watching. Nothing 'magical' is involved. Real magic is something much more sinister, and I could not say myself whether it is real or not. This type of magic could be classed as 'white' magic, as practised in the Wiccan tradition, and intended for good, and 'black magic' used by sorcerers and Satanists, for evil intentions. Try the Google directory under 'religion' for numerous sites on these topics.

Magic is real and lives in the hearts and minds of children everywhere. It is that sense of awe and anticipation, and the belief in all things that are wonderful, exciting and mysterious. As we become adults, our belief in magic is often dispelled and replaced by learning, understanding, and sometimes cynicism. A similar set of responses appeared here at Christmas time, when the question was asked as to whether Father Christmas was real. As old as I ever grow, I hope that I never lose that last scintilla of a childish sense of wonder.
