THE first traffic light to be put into use was in London in 1868 well before the motor car was invented This was to control traffic at a busy intersection in London but only had two colours red and green.Later in Detroit,some say 1919 or 1920 the traffic lights using three colours was installed

The first traffic lights in London were outside The Palace of Westminster to allow easy access to the politicians of the day. The traffic then of course would have been horse drawn.
