John Montague, Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich so he would not have to stop gambling.

To add just a little more: 'Meat or other filling between two slices of bread, so called from the fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). He passed whole days in gambling, bidding the waiter to bring him for refreshment a piece of ham between two slices of bread, which he ate without stopping play.' Brewer's Phrase and Fable.

The sandwich concept was around long before the Earl of Sandwich. Flatbreads with pockets and fillings of various kinds were invented independently in the ancient Americas and the Middle East and probably in other places too, and have been in use for millenia.

Similar to other double-layered flat or pocket breads, pita is traditional in many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. It is prevalent from North Africa through the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula to India and Afghanistan
