Senior Moments says: Lottery won it at Aintree in 1839 when it was called the Grand Liverpool Steeple Chase (1839-42). It was known as The Liverpool and National Steeplechase from 1843 to 1846. The Grand National was first run in 1836 at Maghull, which is four miles from the present site at Aintree, and was won by The Duke. The Duke won it again in 1837 and Sir William in 1838. http://www.grand-national-2003.co.uk/grand_national_event_history_pre_1950.php and the Guinness Encyclopedia of International Sports Records and Results Mon Feb 03 17:07:22 CST 2003 (Delete Entry) The Duke 1836 (abridged version of last reply) Mon Feb 03 17:08:42 CST 2003 (Delete Entry) (Reposted as one entry - McG)
