    Question #27628. Holland asks:

Does anyone know anything about the fruit Maracuya - I have just eaten a peach and maracuya yogurt, but when I looked it up in the dictionary to see if it had a different name, it wasn't there?

The Maracuya (or Maracuja) is more commonly known as Passion Fruit.

Maracuya is a eggshaped fruit that is used extensively here in Peru. Ranging from tennis ball to a softball in size. We have the pale yellow variety here. It is opened to reveal a very seedy pulp inside. It is usually a orange tint to it and eaten raw is ouite stringent and acid. Usually made into a sweetened drink or into ice cream, jellies and desserts. Blended and strained, adding sugar and water it becomes a very pleasing and refreshing drink.
Lots of uses and some recipes on google.com under Peruvian Fruits.

For a better article on the vine and flower, see Wikipedia's article on "Passion flower." Sorry to disappoint, it isn't so named for all the Latin hotties, but because the stigmas suggested Christ's passion (crucifixion) to Spanish priests.

Google "passion fruit" and an image of the seeds in a dish will come up. Beat them in water with a "molinillo," traditionally used for chocolate, strain out the seeds and pulp, and sweeten to taste for a delicious drink.
