Unlike our friends in North America,European countries come and go,change names or disappear completely.Which was the last country to disappear from the map of Europe?

    Question #27741. Asked by WHO AM I. (Feb 06 03 5:29 PM)

    Jimmy

As of a decision of the Federal Parliament a couple of days ago the rump of Yugoslavia will officially be dissolved in due course. The last country to actually disappear was Czechslovakia when is split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In general though the recent trend in Europe has been countries appearing rather than disappearing with the obvious exception of East Germany (but in the great scheme of things that was a temporary split from Germany anyway).

Just to add Jimmy that Yugoslavia did cease to exist this week (Feb 2003)(officially) it's now Serbia and Montenegro and they will become independant countries in 3 years time.

I suppose you could also say that Yugoslavia was a 'temporary' country too, as it was formed after WW1 and has now reverted to what appoximates to its original pre-WW1 constituents.
