    Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who went to sea in 1695 and in 1704 sailed with William Dampier. After a quarrel with Dampier, he was put ashore at his own request on the uninhabited island of Juan Fernandez, and lived there for more than four years till he was picked up by another ship.
