The Sumerians (Babylonians and Assyrians)are usually credited with the first writing system. Cave wall paintings do not count as writing. This is what the E. Britannica says : These are thought to date back to as early as 8000 BC, about the time that hunter-gatherer societies were giving way to an agricultural way of life.

The cuneiform script is the earliest known form of written expression. Created by the Sumerians from ca. 3000 BC (with predecessors reaching into the late 4th millennium Uruk IV period, cuneiform writing began as a system of pictographs. Over time, the pictorial representations became simplified and more abstract.
The term cuneiform means "wedge-shaped." Sumerian writing is wedge-shaped because of the the type of instrument that was used to create it.
