Both are correct in their own right, depends on the definition you care to pick. The 1927 call was achieved using a radio link.(using a conventional handset??) The 1956 call was through the 1st cable to be laid under the ocean. Given that the meaning of telephone is: Tele - at or over a distance, distant - from Greek - tele = far Phone - sound - from the Greek - phone = sound, voice Then surely this happened in 1903 (if not 1901 - test transmission) On January 18, 1903 the first public, two-way wireless communication between Europe and America occurred, and the dream of worldwide communication became reality. http://dev.communicom.net/marconi/
