Sorry sequoianoir, but he was at Oxford when he wrote the book(s). He took up post there in 1925 and The Hobbit/LOTR were written while he was teaching/living here. He retired from the University in 1969 and went to Bournemouth, but both he and his wife are buried here in Oxford. http://www.tolkiensociety.org/tolkien/biography.html

Sorry Jac but I can't see anywhere in the question it says anything about what or where he was when the books were being written. I never claimed he wrote them whilst at Leeds. His first Professorship was at Leeds. Prior to that he was: Assigned to the Lancashire Fusiliers and sent to France where he sees some action in Somme as second Lieutenant. Returns to England suffering from shell shock. Then he Tolkien works as an assistant on the Oxford English Dictionary for two years Then appointment of Tolkien to Readership in English Language, University of Leeds, from October 1, 1920 His Leeds Professorship of English begins October 1, 1924

Nah. 'The author of 'Lord of the Rings'' is a concept that only exists after the book has been written. If the question said 'what were the previous occupations...' then maybe. :-) Never argue with Structuralist lit crit.

Jac. By the same determination then 'the author of Lord of the Rings' didn't have any children, since they were all born before the book had been written. I'm sure almost everyone in the world would answer that he had 4 children. All I can say is if you are on 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' and the question 'How many children did the author of LOTR have?' pops up, then you answer 'none' and stick by your concept !

One could point out that Tolkien was working on the collective history, languages and legends of the Lord of the Rings (some of which are part of the book others not) for most of his life. This would mean that the profession and all occurences of the life of the auhor of the LOTR began when he first started writing theses works. Which I believe was around 1920.
