It was the name of a second-hand furniture store.

THE NAME EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL was taken from a shop (a slogan of what a young gentleman could buy there for the house) in Hull, East Yorkshire, UK, where Ben and Tracey lived during the early 80's. The shop, which stood on the Beverley Road, sold brand new but dated household furniture to newly married couples. http://www.ebtg.com/frontofhouse/name.html (inc. shop picture)
