What was the originial name of the state Tennessee?

Question #28093. Asked by history. (Feb 13 03 5:04 PM)

    Tabby Tom

    Franklin

It seems that Tennessee broke away from North Carolina in 1784 and established itself as the 'State of Franklin' for a few years before being re-absorbed by North Carolina. It achieved statehood as Tennessee in 1796.

This website gives a brief account, which seems to be generally agreed by others.

"The state of Tennessee was named after the Little Tennessee River. Originally 'Tanasi' the river took its name from two Cherokee villages on its banks."

"Eight counties of western North Carolina (and now part of Tennessee) broke off from that state in the late 1780s and formed the abortive State of Franklin. Efforts to obtain admission to the Union failed, and the counties had re-joined North Carolina by 1790. North Carolina ceded the area to the federal government in 1790, after which it was organized into the Southwest Territory."

"Franklin was never officially admitted into the Union of the United States and existed for only four years."
