In America, the emergency phone number for the police is 911. What is it in England?

in England, and the rest of the UK, you dial 999 for any emergency service - police, ambulance, fire, coastguard, mountain rescue. However, if dialling from a mobile phone it is better to use 112as this will connect you if your home network is out of signal where you are but another network is present. 999 on a mobile only works on your own network. I use both these numbers several times a year in the course of my paid work and voluntary work, and have to teach this to Cub Scouts.
