The Norfolk Broads: An area of interlinked shallow freshwater lakes in East Anglia, between Norwich and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, and Lowestoft in North Suffolk. These lakes were formed about 600 years ago when medieval peat diggings were flooded because of a rise in the water level. The lakes are connected by dykes to the six rivers that intersect the region: The rivers Bure, Waveney, Thurne, Yare, Ant and Chet. Principal lakes are Hickling Broad, (at two miles long, this is the largest of the broads), South Walsham, Wroxham, Barton, Surlingham, Filby, Horsey, Ormesby, Rollesby, Rockland, Somerton, and others.
