From: http://www.baseball1.com/twiles/dirt15.html The Brooklyn Dodgers are easy to peg, etymologically speaking. All sources agree that the team was named after the Borough itself. Apparently Brooklyn in the late nineteenth century was a maze of trolley tracks, and the citizens began to refer to themselves as Trolley Dodgers. The name eventually was affixed to their baseball team, beginning in the early 1880s, when Brooklyn's team in the old American Association was nicknamed the Dodgers. When the present-day Dodgers were founded in 1890, they were known variously as the Dodgers, or sometimes, the 'Bridegrooms,' as four key players had been married the winter before.
