The original meaning of Lesbian was 'someone from the Greek island Lesbos' (now called Lesvos. Lesvos is just off the coast of Turkey. The poet Sappho wrote many poems praising the beauty and love of women. She herself was a woman. Modern-day female homosexuals decided to call themselves Lesbians in honour and memory of Sappho. Lesbos is part of the Lesbos Prefecture, the third largest Greek island and the seventh largest in the Mediterranean Sea. The word "lesbian" is derived from the Victorian interpretation of the poems of Sappho, whose poetry was taken to mean sexual love rather than emotional or Platonic love between her and other women.
