    Henri Matisse developed the use of 'cut outs'.

    I don't know the actual answer, but a few years ago in my awful Art Appreciation class, I did a presentation over Matisse and Picasso. I know that Matisse had become very ill and was bed-ridden. He didn't want to give up his art, so he'd stick piece of paper to a long stick, and stick them to the ceiling, and that's how he made pictures. :-) I'll look for my disk with my presentation so I can post a link to verify this
