    The light bulb was not invented by Edison, but by Joseph Swan, a British inventor, who published his work and was plagiarised by Edison who took the credit.

    Why did Thomas Edison invent the light bulb?

    A student in my history class insists Edison was first to invent something to do with using gas for lighting but I know he did electrical stuff like the bulb and electric chair and I think that Napoleon used gas lighting and London Bridge was lit by gas long before Edison was born. Can anyone throw more light on this so I can put this clever clogs in her place please?
