The molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, the chemical substance ultimately responsible for hereditary control of life functions, was discovered in 1953 by biologists Francis Harry Compton Crick of Britain and James D. DNA was first isolated by the Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher who, in 1869, discovered a microscopic substance in the pus of discarded surgical bandages. As it resided in the nuclei of cells, he called it "nuclein."
