How many continents does the equator cross?

That depends on exactly what you mean by continent. The equator definitely crosses South America and Africa. But none of the main land mass of Asia touches the equator. Islands off Asia lie on the equator (Borneo and Sumatra). If you consider these to be part of the continent of Asia, then Asia does cross the equator.

The U.S. Mar 6, 2007 "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" asked this question with an answer of 2. If the contestant missed that question with an answer of 3 I think he would've had good grounds to get back on the show.
mochyn's site said equator passed through 12 countries.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equator
adds São Tomé and Príncipe.

I would say it could even be 4 ...
- Most agree about Africa and South America
- I agree about Asia, tho it is the islands Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Halmahera, and others
- The continent of Australia includes the island of New Guinea. While the main island is below the equator, I wonder if the continent of Australia extends to the smaller islands.
BTW wikipedia says there are 14 countries ... but I don't think Baker Island is a country.
