Is it true that our hair is self-cleaning and we have no good reason to use shampoo?

I remember several years ago watching a TV show, on which a lady taking part in an experiment volunteered to refrain from washing her hair for several weeks, in an attempt to prove this theory. For the first few weeks, her hair was a greasy mess, as you might imagine, but, amazingly, some weeks after that, her hair looked fantastic. So, if this was true, and not some kind of April Fool prank, it would appear that there is some truth to this theory.

I recall seeing a programme similar to that described by Norwich. I remember that the lady who was interviewed said that her hair was lank and greasy and smelled ''like a sheep'' for a while but she persevered. When she was being interviewed, her hair looked great and she said that she did not plan to wash it ever again.

This is why Victorian ladies brushed their hair 100 times a night (and again in the morning). If you brush the natural oils of the scalp through and never let soap touch it, hair does self-clean. Most of us can't bear the intermittent itchy smelly stage though. If you started with a child's hair and never shampooed it, by the time they were old enough to care it would be self-cleaning. A bit of plain water now and again will remove dust, but that's all it needs. It would be no good for me as I like dyeing my hair, which you can't do without washing it. :-(
