My mummy told me that the earth is not completely round like a ball but she can't tell me why. She said it is smaller around the middle. Can you tell me by how much?

The Earth is fatter around the equator than around the poles. This is because it spins. The spinning throws the bits around the equator outwards so that the shape is a bit like a mandarin orange or a tennis ball that has been sat on. How much? Not very much. The diameter of the earth from North Pole to South Pole is 7900 miles. The diameter at the equator is 7926 miles. So you can see there is only 26 miles in the difference, which is not much when you think about the size of the Earth.

If you want to pose, call it an 'oblate spheroid'. All that means is that it's fatter round the middle. But DON'T call your parent(s) this, even if they are!

I worked backstage for this musical the fall of my senior year of college. It's not a well known musical, but I really enjoyed it. See how much you know about the show.
