A Native American scout, by the name of Curly, is reputed to be the only survivor of Custer's immediate party. Other stories claim it was a horse named Commanche. But the Seventh Cavalry was made up of many companies. Custer had 5 with him, and there were 3 with Major Reno, 1 with Captain Benteen, and one more which formed the rear guard. Not all of these men were with Custer on the hilltop where he, died. Many men survived, and helped to bury the dead. The last surviving cavalryman who was at Little Bighorn, although not under Custer's direct command, was a member of Captain Benteen's Company H, Sergeant CHARLES WINDOLF. They had been involved in a skirmish with the Indians the day before the famous battle and they spent the night wondering where Custer was. http://www.deadwood.com/magazine/archives/windolph.htm
