    In very simple terms, an object (substance) floats or sinks in a liquid (fluid) depending upon their relative densities (and hence displacement) to each other. The density (mass to volume ratio) of just about everything varies with temperature.
    The glass bubbles in Galileo's masterpiece are density designed to be borderline floaters and sinkers at very specific temperatures of the water in the column.
