Try sumo wrestling. I typed in "23bc sport history" and the first one that popped up was Sumo and I know it is considered sacred so maybe females were not allowed until recently but maybe I'm not right.

I think golf would be a better answer. I have heard that the term golf is an anagram for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. So that would fit the female spectators being banned, and it is the only well-known sport that is played at a club rather than on a field or a court.
