In snooker, when the cue ball is played into the pack of reds for the opening break, must a certain number of reds come into contact with a cushion in order for the break to be legal?

    Question #29153. Asked by Linus.

You may be thinking of Eight-Ball Pool where at least four object balls must hit the cushions for the break to be legal.

Snooker has no special rules for a break to be legal.

In 8 ball pool, 4 balls, not including the cue ball, must reach a cushion, UNLESS a ball is pocketed from the break in which case the number is irrelevant.

As long as the white ball contacts a red ball the break is legal - in/off the break is a foul and the other player has the option of playing from the D or putting the other player back into play. An illegal break (eg hitting the pink) the opposing player is awarded 6 points and is offered the option of playing or putting the opponent back to the table. As far as I can see it A foul shot cannot be called unless the player deliberatly misses the pack and snookers the other player in which case the referee should call a free ball.

Please clarify this for me, is the highest possible break in snooker 147, or is it possible with the free ball rule that the highest possible break is in actual fact 155? An explanation would be much appreciated.
