What's the plural of the word 'equinox?'

Question #29310. Asked by an alias. (Mar 08 03 5:08 PM)

Assuming you mean 'equinox' as in 'Vernal Equinox' and Autumnal Equinox,' both m-w.com and World Almanac use 'equinoxes' for the plural.

    Technically it should be equinoces.

The plural would only be equinoces if you were talking in Latin. For most Latin words in English, you make the plural the same way as for any other word. For example, pendulums.

In any case, 'equinox' is not a classical Latin word. The Latin is aequinoctium (plural aequinoctia).

The word was coined in the 1600's by a scientist who liked the way it sounded against his interpretation of a Greek word, which, incidently also incorporates the second law of thermodynamics. Although there are many functions for this word, often there are two ways of spelling the plural. What is it, who was the scientist, and how is it related to an adult comic book?
